WIPO: World Intellectual Property Indicators 2023

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has published its annual report with global indicators related to Intellectual Property. Based on statistics on filing, registration and validity of national and regional IP offices in 2022, the indicator covers patents, trademarks, industrial designs, protection of cultivars and geographical indications. It also provides an overview of activity in the creative economy, especially in the publishing industry.

Firstly, when it comes to patents, WIPO points out that 2022 was the third consecutive year in which there was growth (1.7%) in patent filings. It also notes that the statistic is directly related to the presence of China, which filed 1.58 million patent applications worldwide. This was followed by the United States, Japan, South Korea and Germany.  China also received 46.8% of all applications through its patent office in 2022 alone. The US, Japanese, South Korean and European patent offices also led the way in receiving patent applications.

With regard to the backlog of patents pending examination, China’s doubled from 2021 (1.3 million) to 2022 (2.6 million). In contrast, Brazil was mentioned as one of the countries that managed to considerably reduce the number of patents pending examination between 2021 and 2022 (-10.9%).

As for trademarks, the report points to a total decline in the number of global registrations in 2022 of approximately 15.7% compared to the previous year. However, when it came to the countries with the most applications in the same period, China also stood out, with 7.5 million, followed by the USA, with just over 760,000 and India, with around 500,000. Brazil, contrary to the indication of a reduction in filings, saw an increase of 2.6%, and the report highlighted that the country, among the 20 largest offices, was the only one to register an increase in both resident and non-resident filers.

Also, with regard to industrial design filings, the indicator showed that over the last 5 years Brazil has seen a growth in filings consistent with its level of development (GDP).
