The Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office publishes its 2024 Action Plan
On December 29th, the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO) released its 2024 Action Plan, made up of 34 goals and 48 strategic initiatives that should guide the BPTO’s activities throughout the new year. The Plan defines the goals, programs and projects which, according to the Institute, aim to consolidate its activities in line with the guidelines of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services and the National Intellectual Property Strategy (ENPI).
Among the objectives addressed, the first to be highlighted in the annual planning is optimizing the quality and speed of granting and registering industrial property rights (IP). Here, the focus is on reducing the decision time for the technical examination of patent applications. In order to achieve this goal, the BPTO plans to implement initiatives aimed at improving the efficiency of the examination process, including the adoption of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the process.
Next, the Plan establishes the objective of promoting the culture and strategic use of IP for competitiveness, innovation and development in Brazil. It also aims to consolidate Brazil’s position as a leading player in the international IP system. To this end, the BPTO proposes expanding international partnerships, participating in forums and events, and sharing good practices with other global institutions.
In addition, the BPTO has established a priority agenda that highlights initiatives deserving special attention from the administration, with priority in the allocation of efforts and resources. These include, for example: the automation of patent processes, proposals to amend the Industrial Property Law, reviewing the quality of examination processes and AI governance.
Finally, the Plan includes the topic “Transversal Agendas”, in which it seeks to discuss the perspective of gender, diversity, inclusion, environmental sustainability and the development of the bioeconomy in the BBTO’s actions. So, it brings some initiatives in this direction, such as the implementation of affirmative actions, like training programs aimed at historically vulnerable groups and the promotion of sustainable practices in the Institute’s operations.
