In Memory of Peter Dirk Siemsen

A tribute from the Dannemann Siemsen Institute

The Dannemann Siemsen Institute (IDS) pays its deepest tribute to Peter Dirk Siemsen, who passed away on March 22, 2026. Partner of Dannemann Siemsen, as well as the creator and co-founder of IDS, Peter was, above all, a visionary who believed in Brazil’s development through innovation, a builder of institutions, a mentor, and one of the foremost figures responsible for consolidating the culture of intellectual property in Brazil and across Latin America.

From an early age, when he accepted an invitation to work as a patent draftsman at the firm of his great-uncle, Eduardo Dannemann, Peter embarked on a journey that would not only shape his professional life but also influence generations of practitioners and the institutional development of the field.

Peter earned his law degree and, after being appointed an Industrial Property Agent, became a partner of the firm in 1953, when it was renamed Dannemann, Siemsen & Co. Following the passing of Eduardo Dannemann, he assumed leadership of the firm, guiding it to new levels of international recognition and consolidating it as the leading intellectual property firm in Latin America. More than a technically outstanding lawyer, Peter was a strategist with a long-term vision. He understood that intellectual property required not only legal expertise, but also business insight, technological understanding, and a consistent international outlook.

His contribution to the promotion and protection of intellectual property extended far beyond the growth of his firm. Peter firmly believed that intellectual property should be understood as a driver of economic development, innovation, and social progress. This conviction led him to play an active role in national and international associations, such as AIPPI, INTA, FICPI, ASIPI, ABPI, ABAPI, ASPI, and IAB, where he served not only as an engaged participant, but also as a leader.

At the helm of these organizations, he advanced structural initiatives for the sector. Elected President of the Brazilian Intellectual Property Association (ABPI) in 1979, Peter transformed the organization by establishing an annual seminar aimed at educating judges, lawyers, and the private sector on the importance of intellectual property protection. This event soon attracted international participants and evolved into what is now the International Intellectual Property Congress, ultimately contributing to ABPI’s recognition as an official observer at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva.

On the international stage, his influence was equally profound. In 1977, he became the first Brazilian to serve as President of the Inter-American Association of Intellectual Property (ASIPI), an institution he helped found and that, years later, conferred upon him the title of Honorary President. He also held prominent positions within the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) and the International Trademark Association (INTA). In 2013, he became the first Brazilian to be inducted into the “IP Hall of Fame” by Intellectual Asset Management (IAM), in recognition of his outstanding global contributions to the intellectual property system.

Peter understood that building a robust intellectual property culture depends on continuous education, institutional dialogue, and active engagement from civil society. In this context, he played a decisive role in strengthening the interaction between the private sector, government, and academia, contributing to the legislative and institutional advancement of intellectual property in Brazil. He actively participated in discussions and in the drafting of the bill that resulted in Brazil’s current Industrial Property Law.

This same vision underpinned the creation of the Dannemann Siemsen Institute. Following the firm’s centennial celebrations in 2000, Peter, always attentive to renewal, recognized the need for a nonprofit institution capable of disseminating intellectual property knowledge beyond the boundaries of private legal practice, reaching both academic and business communities.

He invited his partner and cousin, Gert Egon Dannemann, to lead this initiative, which became a key vehicle for promoting a culture of intellectual property protection in Brazil.

Peter held a clear conviction: knowledge must be shared and multiplied. As the founder of IDS, he envisioned a dedicated space for the production and dissemination of knowledge, capable of training professionals, fostering research, and contributing to informed debate on contemporary intellectual property challenges.

IDS thus stands as a concrete expression of his commitment to education and to the institutional development of the field. Under his vision, IDS has organized, over more than two decades, national and international seminars, as well as in-person and online events, published landmark works, such as the book “Commentary on the Industrial Property Law,” and established partnerships with leading academic institutions to promote research and knowledge exchange, always with the mission of advancing education and the culture of intellectual property protection.

His legacy remains alive in IDS and in the modern structure of Dannemann Siemsen, now led by generations he trained and inspired, including his children, Elisabeth Siemsen do Amaral and Peter Eduardo Siemsen.

Peter Dirk Siemsen guided intellectual property in Brazil through times of stability and times of adversity. His passing leaves a profound sense of loss, but his work, reflected in every IDS publication, in the structure of the Dannemann Siemsen firm, and in each association he helped build, will continue to illuminate the path of all those committed to intellectual property and innovation.

The Dannemann Siemsen Institute reaffirms its commitment to honoring the vision of its founder, remaining a center of excellence and a beacon of knowledge, exactly as Peter Dirk Siemsen envisioned and brought to life.
