IDS promotes class on IP, design and Artificial Intelligence for Federal University of Rio de Janeiro students
Last Thursday, May 9, the Dannemann Siemsen Institute (IDS) welcomed a group of students from the Visual Communication and Design course at the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) for a lecture on “Introductory aspects of intellectual property aimed at the areas of branding and design”.
The event was attended by IDS’s academic coordinator, Patricia Porto, who spoke about introductory aspects of trademark and copyright law aimed at the areas of branding and design, and Filipe Fonteles Cabral, IDS’s executive director, who looked at important issues involving artificial intelligence (AI) and IP.
Patricia Porto began her lecture by covering trademark law, and dealt with the concept of trademarks, as well as their function and importance. She also brought up subjects such as the nature of trademarks, their forms of presentation and the requirements for registration. Here, the students also learned about the delimitation of trademark law, how to search for trademarks at the INPI and essential notions about Trade Dress, noting the correlation with the theme of the visual identity of brands.
In the second part, it was Patricia’s turn to address Copyright. She brought in various aspects of Law 9610/1998 (LDA) to address topics such as: the requirements for the protection of intellectual works; authorship and co-authorship; the discussion on commissioned works; aspects of moral rights and property rights; the duration of CA; the assignment of CA; limitations on copyright, such as the limitations on this right, among others. Patricia ended her lecture by answering practical questions that professionals in the areas of design and branding have in relation to the ownership of works they have created on commission from third parties or as a result of an employment contract, the care that should be taken when using third-party works in their work, questions related to the use of works created for third parties in their portfolios, among others.
Filipe Fonteles began his lecture with practical and legal issues involving Artificial Intelligence. He first covered basic concepts on the subject and the jargon of the area, and then talked about some hot topics, such as the conflict between copyright and data mining for AI training, and discussions about copyright and patent protection for AI-generated works. Finally, he provided practical tips on what to look out for to avoid legal risks.
IDS would like to thank all the students for their presence and reinforce its commitment to spreading and disseminating IP knowledge, always having the opportunity to continue partnerships with schools, universities, and teaching and/or research institutions.
