IDS participates in the 44th ABPI International Congress
The Dannemann Siemsen Institute (IDS) participated as a supporter of the 44th International Congress of the Brazilian Intellectual Property Association (ABPI). The Congress, held on August 12 and 13 in Porto de Galinhas, Pernambuco, featured the theme “Accelerating towards the Future: Intellectual Property and Ethics in the Face of New Technologies” as the common thread for the debates. IDS was represented by the institute’s executive director, Filipe Fonteles Cabral – who was also one of the event’s scientific coordinators – and by its academic coordinator, Patricia Porto.
The congress was officially opened with a lecture by neuroscientist and UNIFESP professor, Prof. Dr. Álvaro Machado Dias. The keynote speaker, based on reflections and considerations about the influence of language on the development of humanity, as well as the cognitive capacity of the human brain to adapt, shed light on the issue of the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on human evolution and its social and economic consequences.
In this sense, Álvaro Dias pondered that civilizations evolved by sharing their culture and values through sound, speech, images and writing. Until then, the passing on of this knowledge and its assimilation was only possible between humans. According to the professor, with the advent of generative AI, for the first time, man shares his culture with a non-human being who assimilates it.
The event featured a number of other lectures on AI and technology. In this sense, the following were discussed: how AI is shaping content creation, in particular how companies are using AI to increase creativity and efficiency in the creation of advertising campaigns; the regulation of AI in the world, mainly, the Brazilian panorama; the implementation of scientific committees and the adoption of policies for the use of AI; the protection of creations and inventions generated by AI, where the guidelines of the United States patent office on the patenting of inventions involving AI were discussed, among other subjects; and technology as a tool for social inclusion.
The topic of sustainability was also addressed at the congress. The workshop “Pioneering IP strategies for a sustainable world” addressed the sustainable development goals stipulated by the United Nations and debated what actions and initiatives are being promoted by IP associations to meet these goals.
From the perspective of the valuation and financing of intangibles, the event discussed how IP assets can be used as collateral in loans and other transactions to leverage companies’ businesses. Another panel dealt with the particularities of valuing intangible assets.
The National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) was also present at the congress discussions, most notably on the panel “Strategic plans for innovation in the national intellectual property system”. Through its president and its regional head for the Northeast, the agency spoke, among other things: about its actions to expand the agency’s presence in all regions of the country; about the measures adopted to increase the efficiency of examinations for granting IP rights, especially trademarks and patents; and about the need for financial autonomy to make all the initiatives and improvement actions proposed by the agency viable.
The congress also featured several other panels and table topics on issues related to IP and its institutes.
