IDS attends the 2nd International Seminar of Women in Intellectual Property, an event organized by the IP Female Network, focused on discussing the gender perspective in IP

On Thursday (02/29), in celebration of International Women’s Day, the IP Female Network, a group that aims to mobilize women in the field of intellectual property (IP) to exchange experiences, democratize knowledge and good practices in the market, held its 2nd International Seminar for Women in Intellectual Property. The theme of the event was “Connections and networks to promote gender equality in IP”. IDS academic coordinator Patricia Porto was present at the event.

The seminar was attended by women from a wide range of fields, including lawyers, professors, judges, engineers, company directors and members of governmental and non-governmental organizations from Brazil and abroad. As a common point, most of the speakers participate in one or more networks connecting women in IP or related areas.

In the first panel, entitled “Building Connections: the importance of synergy between networks of women in IP and innovation”, the speakers began by explaining the importance of connection groups and cooperation networks between women in the field of IP. Light was shed on the problem of the lack of women judges in the IP panels of Brazilian courts, as well as the lack of women in leadership positions and decision-making councils.  Thus, there was talk of education and the exchange of experiences between women, using networks as a driving mechanism for a new corporate culture in IP.

Later on, the second panel dealt with “Regional Disparities in the Circulation of Knowledge in Intellectual Property” and looked, among other topics, at the role of Brazilian women in traditional techniques and knowledge. It also discussed female entrepreneurship and innovation as measures to combat gender inequality, through visibility actions, partnerships, and the dissemination of knowledge.

The third and final panel of the seminar dealt with the theme of “Diversity and Women’s Innovation in Brazil and the USA”. The panel discussed racial diversity in industry and technology, and then presented some public policy initiatives in the US and the UK aimed at promoting gender equity in IP.
