IDS 2025 Retrospective
In 2025, the Dannemann Siemsen Institute (IDS) continued and further strengthened its activities aimed at promoting, disseminating, studying, and researching Intellectual Property (IP), reaffirming its commitment to fostering qualified debate on current and relevant issues in the field, both in Brazil and internationally.
Throughout the year, IDS organized a diverse program of academic events, with particular emphasis on Agenda IDS, the Institute’s consolidated initiative dedicated to roundtable discussions and webinars featuring national and international experts. In 2025, Agenda IDS held seven events addressing central topics on the contemporary IP agenda, encompassing the impacts of the so-called dupes phenomenon, the application of artificial intelligence in the music industry, compulsory patent licensing from the perspective of BRICS countries, as well as discussions on patents and compounded medicines, recent updates to the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (INPI) procedures in trademark matters, and the legal and market perspectives of franchise expansion in Brazil and Europe, with a focus on Portugal.
Within this set of events, particular prominence was given to the discussion on trade secrets and unfair competition, which brought together experts to examine the topic from both European and Brazilian perspectives. The event featured Dr. Jörn Feddersen, Justice of the German Federal Court of Justice (Bundesgerichtshof), who presented the European Trade Secrets Directive and discussed its practical application, as well as procedural challenges and protective measures available to rights holders. All Agenda IDS events are freely accessible on our website.
In the field of IP education outreach, IDS had the pleasure, for the third consecutive year, of delivering a class on Intellectual Property and Branding to the Visual Identity Project group of the Visual Communication and Design program at Rio de Janeiro Federal University. IDS also participated in Fundação Getúlio Vargas – FGV/RJ’s Monitored Holiday Activity Program, hosting, for one month, a student from the institution as a research intern.
In addition to initiatives aimed at external audiences, IDS supported Dannemann Siemsen in internal educational activities under the DS Conhecimento (DS Knowledge) project. In this context, the 3rd and 4th Dannemann Siemsen Student Seminars were held—biannual meetings designed to foster learning and the exchange of experiences, featuring discussions on current IP topics in the areas of Patents, Trademarks, Legal Affairs, and Contracts.
With respect to external institutional engagement, IDS took part, in August 2025, in the 45th International Congress of the Brazilian Intellectual Property Association (ABPI), held in São Paulo, as an institutional supporter, with its own booth. This participation reinforced the Institute’s presence in one of Brazil’s leading national forums for discussions on innovation and technology.
Regarding publications, in 2025 IDS released the Intellectual Property Annual Report in Brazil – 2024, a document compiling relevant data, statistics, and analyses on the Brazilian trademark, patent, and industrial design landscape, as well as legislative updates, major news highlights, and commented court decisions. The publication reflects the Institute’s collaborative effort to provide qualified insights for debate and reflection on the sector’s evolution in the country.
The Institute also maintained continuous engagement in content production and dissemination. Throughout 2025, IDS published weekly analyses, news, and institutional content on its website and social media channels, including LinkedIn and Instagram, systematically monitoring key developments in IP, technology, and related fields.
IDS extends its appreciation to all those who collaborated, participated in, or supported its activities throughout 2025. The Institute concludes the year by reaffirming its commitment to the promotion of knowledge and research and, in 2026, remains dedicated to strengthening academic and institutional debate, fostering the exchange of ideas, and developing new initiatives in support of the field.
