ICANN launches global service that simplifies requests for non-public domain name registration data

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the organization that coordinates the naming and numbering systems on the Internet, launched a new service in November, called the Registry Data Request Service (RDRS).

This service connects applicants seeking “non-public registration data” (NPRD) with ICANN-accredited registry entities for gTLD (Generic Top-Level Domain) domain names that participate in the service.

The NPRD includes personal data of domain name registrants, such as name, address, e-mail address, etc. Previously, this information was easily accessed in databases known as “WHOIS”.   Today, due to compliance with data protection laws, this information is no longer necessarily published, and registries may require the applicant to have a legitimate interest in accessing the data.

Gaining access to NPRD is important, for example, for intellectual property (IP) professionals, information security professionals, law enforcement authorities, government officials, among others, in combating infringements and tracking down illegal activities online. The benefits include making it easier for IP professionals to obtain data on domain name holders, facilitating measures to combat possible violations of third parties’ IP rights.

According to ICANN, “without a unified way to request or access this data, it can be difficult for interested parties to obtain the information they need. The RDRS helps by providing a simple, standardized process for making these types of requests.”

It is important to note that this service is only available for gTDL domains (e.g. .com, gov, .org) and cannot be used to obtain information on ccTDL domains (country code top-level domain), such as the “. br” domain.
