IDS Presents Research Fellowship and Mentorship Initiatives at the 46th ABPI Congress

The 46th International Congress of the Brazilian Intellectual Property Association (ABPI) – Global Meeting on Innovation and Intellectual Property, held from August 16 to 18 in Rio de Janeiro, marked the presentation of new initiatives by the Dannemann Siemsen Institute (IDS) focused on research, education, and professional development in the field of intellectual property.

Among the new initiatives, IDS launched the Peter Dirk Siemsen Intellectual Property Research and Development Program (PPDPI-PDS) and its first public call for applications for a 12-month research felowship, with a total grant amount of BRL 90,000.

The research must be conducted in Portuguese and address the topic “The Importance of Biotechnology Patents for the Development of Agribusiness in Brazil.” Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree and a master’s or doctoral degree, in any field of knowledge, be authors or co-authors of an academic publication related to the topic and have an average availability of 20 hours per week to conduct the project.

Applications will be open from August 19 to September 18, 2026, in accordance with the rules set forth in the call for applications, which is available on the IDS website. The grant period is scheduled to begin on January 11, 2027.

The Congress also featured a draw for two spots in professional and academic mentorship in intellectual property (IP), aimed at undergraduate students and professionals who graduated no more than five years ago, from any field, and who are interested in pursuing a career in IP.

The mentorship sessions will last up to one hour and will be conducted online by Patricia Carvalho da Rocha Porto, Academic Coordinator of IDS and an attorney and researcher with more than 20 years of experience in the intellectual property field. She holds a D.Sc. from UFRJ and a master’s degree from the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO) and teaches in the postgraduate programs in Intellectual Property at both PUC-Rio and BPTO Academy.

The drawing was held on August 17 at 4:00 p.m. at the IDS booth at the Congress. The following day, on August 18, the selected participants will meet in person with the mentor, also at the Congress, to discuss their interests and determine the next steps for the mentorship.
