BPTO releases the rankings of applicants for industrial property assets in 2025

On May 25, 2026, the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO) released the 2025 Applicant Rankings, an annual publication that identifies the largest applicants for industrial property assets in the country: patents, trademarks, industrial designs, and computer programs. The document separates applicants into residents and non-residents in Brazil and organizes the number of filings by company, economic activity, and Federative Unit.

With respect to invention patents, the 51 largest resident applicants accounted for 1,957 of the 7,021 applications filed during the year. Approximately seven out of ten are universities, federal institutes, and research centers, with education representing 20.9% of the participants in the ranking. Nevertheless, the lead remains with industry. The automaker Stellantis Automóveis Brasil holds first place for the second consecutive year, with 225 filings, followed by Petrobras, with 172, and the Federal University of Minas Gerais, with 94. Regionally, the Southeast (47.1%) and the Northeast (29.4%) concentrate the ranking; São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro have the largest number of applicants, although Minas Gerais records the highest volume of filings. Petrobras is also the principal coordinator of the collaboration network, taking part in 49 joint filings that connect innovation hubs such as UFRJ.

Among non-residents, the 50 largest applicants amounted to 6,183 of the 19,805 applications in 2025. The United States leads, with 30% of the companies in the ranking, ahead of China, with 20%; in comparison with 2024, the Americans lost share and the Chinese advanced. The predominant activities are electronics and information technology (27.8%), chemical products (14.8%), and pharmaceuticals (11.1%). At the top, two technology companies repeat the previous year’s lead, but in reverse order: Huawei assumed the leading position, with 652 filings, overtaking Qualcomm, which recorded 514.

In utility models, the concentration varies according to origin. Among residents, the largest applicants gathered 228 of the 2,540 applications, with Petrobras again in the lead (15 filings), followed by Flávio Aparecido Peres (13) and Nely Cristina Braidotti (11), which combines a large state-owned enterprise and individual inventors. Non-residents move a considerably smaller universe, of only 96 applications, all of them encompassed by the ranking and mostly of Asian origin; the leading positions went to Fiberhome Telecommunication Technologies and Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology, both with four applications, and Donati, with three.

In the ranking of trademarks filed by residents, the 50 largest applicants gathered 6,695 of the 458,722 domestic applications of the year. At the forefront are Payno Gestão Empresarial e Participações, with 305 applications, Neymar Sport e Marketing, with 278, and Banco Mercantil do Brasil, with 236. By principal economic activity, the companies are concentrated in commerce (wholesale, retail, and vehicles), which accounts for 21.2% of the applicants. Beyond this formal classification, the ranking reveals value chains that cut across several sectors: that of health, ranging from pharmaceutical manufacturers to distributors and health plan operators, and the real estate chain, from construction companies and real estate developers to construction service providers. Also noteworthy is the use of registration by influencers and public figures, as in the cases of the aforementioned Neymar Sport e Marketing and VIIHTUBE Produções (145 applications), linked to the content creator Viih Tube.

Among non-residents, the 50 largest accounted for 3,399 of the 31,126 foreign trademark applications. The United States leads, with 29.4% of the companies, followed by South Korea, with 7.8%. The electronics and information technology chain appears from end to end, and the sectors of greatest weight are electronics and information technology (13.7%), pharmaceuticals (10%), and IT services (9.8%). The leading individual highlight is the Bulgarian company Euro Games Technology, with 279 filings.

In industrial designs, the lead in filings by residents lies with Thiago Capossoli (220 filings), Jinwen Chen (170), and the footwear manufacturer Grendene (102). In total, the largest applicants accounted for 1,799 of the 6,880 resident applications. Among non-residents, which concentrated 1,468 of the 3,135 foreign filings in 2025, companies in technology, electronics, and consumer goods stand out, led by Anran Supply Chain Management (182 filings), Huawei (109), and Philips (95). In computer programs, the largest resident applicants gathered 1,935 of the 7,412 registrations, with prominence given to Fundação CPQD, the Federal Rural University of the Semi-Arid Region (UFERSA), and the Eldorado Research Institute.
