IDS Restrospective 2024

In 2024, the Dannemann Siemsen Institute (IDS) intensified its efforts to promote and disseminate the culture, study, and research of Intellectual Property (IP). Through the development of events and academic materials on various topics, IDS sought to foster debate and reflection on current and relevant issues for IP in Brazil and worldwide.

Throughout the year, IDS organized a series of events. The traditional online event, Agenda IDS, addressed important topics on IP, law, and technology, featuring national and international experts in the discussed fields. In 2024, Agenda IDS held nine webinars covering the following themes: updates on the recordation of technology transfer agreements: the role of INPI in reducing fiscal risk; second medical use patents: enforcement and skinny labeling; key issues regarding proof of trademark use; strategic litigation management; technical evidence: proving trademark renown and market research in IP judicial cases; trade dress infringements: a global perspective and Brazil’s specificities; Mercado Livre: Brand Protection Program and Anti-Counterfeiting Alliance (programs for protecting intellectual property rights and combating counterfeiting by Mercado Livre); intellectual property rights in Brazil related to plant innovations; and key issues in patent litigation.

Among other events organized by IDS or with its participation, the following stand out: in March, the lecture by lawyer and professor Fredie Didier Jr., who discussed the “Brazilian Multi-Door Justice System,” the central theme of the book Introduction to Multi-Door Justice – A System for Solving Legal Problems and the Profile of Access to Justice in Brazil, co-authored with Professor Leandro Fernandez. In August, IDS participated in the 44th International Congress of ABPI. Closing the year, the institute organized, in December, the 4th Seminar on Civil Procedure and Industrial Property, an in-person event that brought together prominent figures from the national legal scene to debate procedural aspects related to Industrial Property, their practical implications, and the positions adopted by Brazilian courts. This edition featured scientific coordination by Judge Alexandre Câmara and academic coordination by Marcelo Mazzola. The lectures addressed controversial issues involving provisional remedies, current topics and their practical implications, as well as the formation of precedents and the selection of cases in the context of IP.

In the realm of partnerships between IDS and educational and research institutions, the institute hosted students from the Industrial Design department of UFRJ for a lecture on IP focused on Branding and Design. Additionally, within the scope of the DS Learning Project, IDS, in partnership with Dannemann Siemsen, offered introductory lectures on IP topics for interns and students of the Dannemann Siemsen firm, as well as for young apprentices from the CAMP Mangueira program.

Regarding publications, in addition to several written articles, the third edition of the IDS Jurisprudence Yearbook was released. The document compiled 11 articles with commentary on relevant decisions in the fields of patents, trademarks, copyrights, unfair competition, as well as issues involving civil law, civil procedural law, and business law, issued in 2023. The institute also expanded its presence on social media, publishing biweekly posts with updated news on intellectual property, technology, and related topics. Over 100 posts were published throughout 2024.

IDS expresses its gratitude to everyone who contributed to, participated in, or supported its events and activities throughout the year. The institute wishes everyone happy holidays and an excellent end of the year. In 2025, IDS will remain steadfast in its commitment to promoting knowledge and research in Intellectual Property, fostering the exchange of ideas, and launching new initiatives to strengthen the field.
