Last Tuesday (8), the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO) published its Monthly Industrial Property Bulletin, a statistical document that evaluates industrial property (IP) applications and grants. This edition covers both the month of December and an overview of the year 2023.

According to the Bulletin, compared to 2022, there was an increase in patent filings (+2.9%), trademarks (+6.4%), computer programs (+16.1%) and geographical indications (+22.7%). On the other hand, there was a decrease in applications for registration of technology contracts (-16.9%) and industrial designs (-2.0%).

The statistics also show that, in terms of grants in 2023, there was a cumulative increase in trademark registrations (+29.3%), totaling 210,987 registrations, as well as 5,674 computer programs (+56.6%), and 990 contract registrations (+0.1%), while patent grants fell by 21.1%, totaling 19,204 patents.

Furthermore, on a quarterly basis, the INPI presents data for the period from October to December 2023. At this point, patent applications reached the 7,873 mark, representing an increase of 4.9% over the previous quarter. Of these, 7,155 were invention patent applications, while 681 were utility models. With regard to trademarks, the last quarter of 2023 saw 98,656 applications for registration, a variation of -5.4% on the previous quarter.

Finally, the document analyzes the profile of filings and grants, providing information on applicants by country of origin and legal nature. It notes that the United States led the way in invention patent applications (30%), followed by Brazil (20%), China (7%), Germany (6%) and Switzerland (5%). The majority of applications for utility models, trademarks, industrial designs and technology contracts were filed by representatives from Brazil.

Furthermore, individuals accounted for 34% of the 4,971 invention patent filings made by residents, while MEIs, micro-enterprises and EPPs accounted for 51% of the 387,310 trademark filings.
